Can someone explain to me why in Khmer translation Hong Rong call her self Hong Er, what does the Er mean in terms of khmer?

  • LianNiChang

Er is what you call someone like your child, spouse, it symbolizes endearment of someone that you are close and fond of. It’s the equivalent of Huang Rong calling Guo Jing “Bong Jing” and vice versa. It’s the translators themselves that probably don’t quite understand because in the old dubbed version the translator always says “Bong Jing” and not “Jing Er” and it would be more correct. Or it could be the translators assume everyone knows Chinese or something. lol

It’s most commonly used from parents/adults to kids, so Huang Rong would say “Fu Er” to Guo Fu her daughter, or “Xiang Er” to Guo Xiang whom is also her daughter. She wouldn’t call them “Guo Er” because that is their surname and not their given name. In Khmer she would be saying “Koun Fu and Koun Xiang. XLN would also call Yang Guo “Guo Er” which would translate in Khmer to “Koun Guo”.

Of course this is Mandarin because in Cantonese if would be “Yi” and not “Er”. I’m surprised the translators used the Mandarin version because this is an HK series which is spoken entirely in Cantonese. But translating from Mandarin into Khmer is easier though. Kwok Jing (Guo Jing in Cantonese) would refer to Wong Yung (that is Huang Rong in Cantonese) as “Yung Yi” and she would refer to him as “Jing Yi”. Wong Yung’s daughter Kwok Fu (Guo Fu), she would refer to her as “Fu Yi” and she’d refer to her other daughter Kwok Seung (Guo Xiang) as “Seung Yi”. It can get quite confusing.

thanks for the explanation LianNiChang. do you happen to speak chinese too? πŸ˜€

  • LianNiChang

ε„Ώ That is the spelling in Chinese (simplified) and it is also used in actual names as well. The traditional letter is ε…’. Not to be confused with the another word “Er” meaning the number two in Mandarin with this spelling. 二 The pronunciation is done a little differently and I have a hard time understanding it all myself. Chinese is one of the hardest languages to master.

Oops my bad you are right Alex. I thought we were discussing Legend of The Condor Heroes 1982 this whole time for some reason. I wasn’t even looking at the picture. lol Yes this show is Mandarin and not Cantonese. Miu Kiu Wai indeed speaks Mandarin as well but he spoke in Cantonese in the old version. A few HK artists do indeed speak Mandarin (some not very well, Ada Choi said her husband is afraid when she speaks Mandarin to him. I find it adorable because Max doesn’t speak much Cantonese either. lol)

Ahbee I only know the bare basics when it comes to Chinese. When I say phrases to some of my friends sometimes they understand me sometimes they don’t lol I don’t have the mothertongue for Mandarin either. When I see White guys on youtube speaking Mandarin more fluently than Chinese people themselves I have to admire them. I know more Cantonese in person because of growing up watching HK series and most of my friends spoke Cantonese.

  • ahbee

oh ok LianNiChang and that is still pretty nice! i only know of a friend that can speak decent chinese but she doesn’t even watch chinese series lol
