At a lantern fair, scholar Cheung Kwan Shui and Hung Neung each pick up half of a matching jade but never meet. Shui later saves Prime Minister’s daughter Chui Ang Ang from kidnappers and is promised her hand in marriage, only for the promise to be withdrawn unless he becomes a royal scholar. While studying at the West Chamber, Shui remains engaged to Ang Ang. Meanwhile, the emperor Tong Dak Chung, traveling incognito as Bun, falls for Ang Ang and pursues her, despite her engagement to Shui. Hung Neung, Ang Ang’s close friend, secretly loves Shui and struggles to hide her feelings. As a search begins for a missing Tibetan princess betrothed to the emperor, the intertwined relationships of the four are thrown into confusion.
