Chung Cheuk Man, a wealthy and influential Chinese barrister who studied in England, embraces a Western lifestyle but remains deeply traditional. He has five wives: Koo Sum Lan, Yee Yin, Yik Yee Fong, Peking opera star Hong Chi Kwan, and the vain Chiu Tan Tan. Although Chi Kwan is his favorite, the two clash over women’s social status.

Meanwhile, Cheuk Man’s two sons rebel against their strict father, while his daughter, Chung Ho Yee, defies the family by marrying a poor policeman. As tensions tear the family apart, Kam Muk Shui infiltrates the household seeking revenge over the marriage of his beloved Kwai Siu Yau to a Chung family son.
