Set in early 20th-century Shanghai, the series follows Chan Zan, who arrives with his sister seeking a new life after bandits destroy their hometown. He joins the Green Gang but leaves after they refuse to help him avenge his sister's death. Inspired by Fok Yuen-gap’s ideals, Chan joins Ching-mou School and becomes a top disciple. He falls in love with Yumi, daughter of a Japanese consul, but their relationship is doomed by political tensions. After Fok is poisoned by a Japanese plot, Chan leads the resistance. In a final battle, he defeats the enemy and avenges his master, but Yumi dies, and Chan charges into enemy fire in a defiant act of sacrifice.
