The story of a once-thriving restaurant unfolds through the lives of four women from different generations, each facing the enduring challenges of marriage and the burdens uniquely carried by women throughout history. In the late Qing Dynasty, Ngai Yu Fung's once-prosperous family falls into ruin. With no other option, she marries Wong Yuk Lun, who later squanders their wealth. Desperate, Fung pawns a love token from her first lover, Yu Tsz, and uses the money to establish the Phoenix Restaurant. Years later, during the May Fourth Movement, Fung’s daughter Wong Chi Kwan elopes to Tianjin with her teacher, Lee Kat Cheung. Their relationship eventually dissolves, and Kwan returns to a struggling Beijing — where the Phoenix Restaurant now stands on the brink of collapse.
